Smile at Drivers Who Cut You Off

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." - Martin Luther King Jr.

Fighting fires with fire only causes more fire, unless its being used as a control line to prevent forest fires! Darkness and hate are two of the near strongest energy sources known to humans, but love and light are stronger. I don't scream at the person cutting me off on the road on the way to work, instead I smile and give them a friendly wave to let them know I forgive them. Although what they did was reckless, dangerous and flat out annoying, it doesn't do anyone good if I were to react hysterically. It would of made me aggravated and potentially would turn me into a more aggressive driver, raising the chances of cutting someone else off spoiling their drive too. Instead I spread a little happiness through a wave and smile hoping they see it, if it changes their mood even in the slightest I know I've done the world a service in that moment. This is how MLK's words and intentions from the 1960s can be applied to everyday life more than a semicentennial later. This concept applies to all experiences, internal and external. Inside my mind there can be scary dark and hateful thoughts, these do not get removed with darker more hateful ones. No, I must shift my mindset to something more positive, more loving. Or else I will be caught fighting fire with fire, eternally burning myself until the damage is irreversible. Be the light you want to see in the world!
